The union hopes a higher court will overturn the bankruptcy court ruling from 10 May that lets United pass along its workers pensions to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp PBGC.

The carrier said its settlement with the PBGC would save it about USD645m annually over five years, although its current and retired workers will lose some retirement benefits.

The AFA promised surprise intermittent strikes if the carrier terminated their pensions but so far the union has not carried out that threat, reported Reuters.
